Welcome to Tyler's Town

Population: 1, so far...

Clip_image002_1Tyler is a 5-year-old (approx.) male shepard mix that was picked up off the streets of N.O. 10/10/05 by the LA Humane Society. He was so scared he wouldn't walk, and was carried out from under the house where he was hiding.

He was traumatized by the hurricane, but he's a really nice dog. He needs a good home, some love & some patience. He has been living with me since we returned from the Gulf on 10/16. He won't let me out of his sight when I'm at home. You can see in his eyes "I"ve lost 1 owner — I'm not losing another." He gets along really well with my 2 dogs and has left my cat alone after being scolded (only once) for chasing her. He seems to learn quickly. He has had an issue with being tugged by his collar, but that has been manageable. He loves having his leash attached though and going for walks.100_3028

He is housebroken, has been neutered, microchipped and has all of his shots. He can be adopted through Happy Hills Animal Foundation for $170 as of 11/17/05. I would love to find someone to foster to adoption. I don't want to keep moving this poor guy around.

Thanks to Kelly Ronnow for this update!

We're Plan "B'ers"

As of Wednesday, Bayou Rescue had to make the decision to postpone the next trip for 11 days, in order to procure more supplies, donations, and the ever-so-essential copilot and volunteer #2 (Anyone that knows of Amber's tendency for sleepy-driver-syndrome shuddered at the thought of her driving 27+ hours by herself).

WsmlogoWe had started to wonder how things would happen at all, then this morning we were notified by Weaver Street Market in Carborro that they will be generously sponsoring our next trip, AND Dave has started walking again (he had knee surgery on Monday).

So the NEW deadline for drop-off of supplies to be transported to sites along the MS gulf and New Orleans will be Thursday, October 27th.  Attached is an up to date list of needs.  If you'd like to help provide any of these supplies, you may drop them off at Four Paws Animal Hospital in Chapel Hill (off Raleigh Rd/Hwy 54 near UNC).  ALSO - if you can make a trip BEFORE 11/6 - please let us know!

THANK YOU WEAVER STREET MARKET!!

If you've been waiting...

Nola_imageNOW is still a perfect time to volunteer! Bayou Rescue has received several pleading offers for volunteers ASAP. Many of these organizations are still even doing rescues and finding animals alive, and most all of them are short handed.

Thanks to a recent and very generous donation from Weaver Street Market in Carrboro, we are able to help TODAY with supply needs to some of these organizations, but they really really need HANDS yesterday.
Please click on the PDF below for an update of a few of these sites.  If you are interested in helping at any of these places in the next week we'll do everything we can to help  you.  Just email us  if you can leave in the next week.

NEW BEGINNINGS

Pict0035Pict0043Pict0045Saint has found a new home with Margie and her family in Raleigh. Margie has recently been faced with some considerable health challenges, and feels that Saint may have come to her at just the right time. Margie said, "I have the best husband in the world, and now I also have this wonderful puppy." We know for certain that she came to Saint at just the right time,  and he is lucky indeed.
According to Jen Strom who brought Saint to NC: "Saint was found tied up as a "bait dog" between two fighting dogs in New Orleans, standing chest-deep in toxic floodwater and starving, several weeks after the storm.  Thanks to IAR, and donations from caring folks, all of Saint's injuries have been treated, he's been neutered, and he's mastering basic obedience. He's well on his way to perfect health, gaining weight and digging his new status as a beloved and oh-so-slightly spoiled family pet. IAR's vet put his age at less than a year, and now that he's recovered physically and emotionally from the trauma of his earlier life, you can tell what a puppy he is when he races joyfully around his new house tossing his new stuffed monkey up in the air and stopping to lick everyone's faces."

TEAM LANIGAN & RONNOW HAVE RETURNED

Colleen Lanigan and Kelly Ronnow returned this weekend from Tylertown, where they worked (and worked!) at the Louisiana Humane Society site.  Colleen, a self-confirmed dog person, fell in love with many of the felines she worked with in the cat room, and even brought one home to nurse back to health. Apparently, Colleen's dog Rizzo is equally smitten with the kitten (and she with him!).  Colleen and Kelly also brought back 2 other kittens and 3 dogs, which are being fostered in homes, thanks to Happy Hills.  Ready to go back Colleen & kelly??? We're still looking for a co-pilot!

IF YOU ARE NEW TO THE SITE.

...Check for the "old" but good news under ARCHIVES, listed on the right.

Needs for next departure...

Logistics are being planned for another trip Oct. 26th - 31st. Plan "A" is to go to Bay St. Louis and Pass Christian for some drop offs of human and pet supplies, then to New Orleans to either the Mutt Shack or the Winn Dixie staging area to deliver supplies and help care for animals (volunteers are getting scarce!)

We will not be renting a cargo van this time so space is limited.  Priority needs as of today are gas cards (Shell,Mobile, Exxon) and Walmart Cards.  These allow us to purchase fuel for generators, water for animals and humans, ice, and other daily essentials which can be transported back and forth in a car.

If you can drop items off TODAY, 10/19 at Four Paws Animal Clinic in Chapel Hill, they will be delivered to our departure 'spot' in Banner Elk tomorrow.  Otherwise, please consider mailing items to be delivered by Tuesday 10/25 to:    10405 hwy 105 S,  Banner Elk,  NC  28604.

To say we need your help is an understatement - this trip depends on it!

Ready for your home...

Tanshepx

This affectionate guy, "Saint," is one of the first Katrina rescues available for adoption in the triangle.  He is a good boy, thus aptly named.  He gets along with other dogs and loves to play.  He stays quietly in his crate, and hasn't had ANY accidents in his foster home.  He is eager to bond with people, and other dogs, but not cats.  So if you are a home with lots of love but no felines, this may be a great match for you.  He is also very healthy, and will be neutered on 10/18/05.  If you cannot commit to his lifetime but can provide a cat-free foster home, that is also much needed.  PLEASE EMAIL KATHY RUDY to bring this one marching to you soon!

Kittens Missi and Mardi, and their mom are ready for their forever homes.  These babies were found under a roof overhang by Jennifer Strom (READ THE SEPT. 27TH ARCHIVE) and are currently being fostered by Helen Needham.  If you can provide shelter and lots of love for these survivors, please email IAR today!

Next trip being planned

Reports from the many volunteers that have been in the MS and LA area in the past two weeks are that the need for help and certain donations are still there (and there, and there, and there).

Bayou Rescue is working on logistics of another trip in the next 2 weeks.  We'd like to supply ongoing needs of 1) fuel for generators, 2) small refrigerators, 3) gallon water in storage tubs  4) vet supplies, 5) gatorade and 6) supplies such as can openers, DUCT tape, scissors, etc.

If you can drop off items at Four Paws or Jane Marshall's house by THURSDAY, OCT. 20, they will be delivered from the triangle to our departure site here in Banner Elk, NC.  Please email us if you can help.

Tails from LA..

...Carrie Ward and Julie Eldridge returned on Tuesday after NON STOP work at Camp Katrinia in Tylertown (HSLA), the Mutt Shack and Winn Dixie location in New Orleans .  ANIMALS ARE STILL BEING BROUGHT IN to these rescue organizations!!  Click on the PDF below for her full account.

All of these organizations still need volunteer help, including vet techs.  The N.O. sites still don't have electricity or running water (can you imagine caring for hundreds of animals under those circumstances???
