ADOPT A SURVIVOR!

As of 1/11/06, there are still at least 19 canine and 3 feline hurricane survivors in foster in the triangle area.  Many have been waiting for a forever home since September 2005.

Totobillycafe2Billy1Billy the Yorkshire Terrier is on the mend from some nasty skin cuts on his back. His injury hasn’t impaired his energy.  His foster mom, Carrie Griffin says he’s quite the playful one. Billy’s last day in New Orleans included a trip to the local french bakery.  He’s decided that chocolate almond croissants, and a playmate, are keys to a happy life. Billy is also being fostered by Best Buddies.

Shybrindface_1Cane, the shepard mix in foster with Gil-Ann at Best Buddies, has really come out of his shell with their treatment of 100 kisses per day. When we first met him, this guy was so terrified  he was difficult to coax out of his cage. Gil-Ann has emailed reports of frolicking, playing with other dogs, and happy talk.  This we’ve got to see!  We’re glad Cane is in such good hands because he will still need to undergo treatment for his heartworms. Given his new home, we doubt this will do much to dampen his spirits.

LOTS O' BEAGLES!! One of the first arrivals in September was a van full of 10 beagles from Best Friends.  Of those, 3 have been reunited with their person in LA, and 1 has been adopted.  However, one of the 6 remaining, CHI CHI, was pregnant, and so now there are also 7 beaglish puppies.  These dogs were among our favorites at the Best Friends location in Tylertown.  So sweet, friendly, and fun.  Please go to Triangle Beagle Rescue to view these deserving and loving beagles!

SADA and BAILEY - These sisters were surrendered by their family after Katrina, and have been wSadabaileylarge_2aiting for a home for over 3 months since they arrived in N.C.  This pretty pair of rat terriers are a great compliment to each other. Sada is very energetic and outgoing, and Bailey is a bit more shy and calm. They love to play chase with each other.  Sada would make an excellent agility dog, and Bailey would love to go along for the ride.  Sada and Bailey house-broken, crate trained, and walk well on a leash.  They are looking for a home where they can live together, and will have a fenced yard and enough love for them both.  To find out more about Sada and Bailey, please complete the application for Independent Animal Rescue.  IAR also has a handsome red hound, LOUIE in foster - check him out!

Katielarge Katie was rescued from an overhang in a decimated area of MS, where she was caring for her her young kittens.  Katie has been through an awful ordeal but is energetic and playful now that she's been given food, TLC, and no longer has to live in 'survival mode.'  This young mom loves to be rubbed under her chin and on her face. She also loves her foster pal Sammy, and is hoping they might be adopted together so she can keep her friend by her side.  Katie, as well as Aja, another refugee kitty, are available through Independent Animal Rescue.

Nolasit Nola1 NOLA (Referral)- This young lady was brought to NC by Ann Jordan after being rescued from the streets of New Orleans in October.  Nola was adopted to a family in Charlotte, but she is a fence jumper and ended up spending most of her day in a garage.  Now she's back in foster with Ann, and is hoping for a home that will invite her inside to stay with her family.  Nola is about 1 year old, and loves children.  She also seems to do OK with cats, and plays well with other dogs.  She is an excellent snuggler, and longs to be part of a loving family. Nola will need treatment for heartworm.  If you have room in your home and heart for her, please email Ann directly to schedule a meeting. UPDATE: NOLA'S owner has been located. As of now, he is hoping to be able to care for her when he moves.  Right now, however, Nola still needs treatment for heartworm, spay, and someone to give her a safe foster home while she recovers.
