Big Animals....

Ritacow Need BIG HELP.  Several organizations dedicated to the rescue of cattle and horses in the gulf area need your help.  There is still a severe shortage of hay due to saltwater damage, and an equally big need for volunteers.

VERMILLION ANIMAL AID needs your help in caring for more than 400 horses and 2,500 cows and small animals.  These area residents lost their homes to Rita.  They are most desperate for hay, and also need antibiotics, vaccines, sack feed, and more.  Supplies can be shipped, to Abbeville, LA donations can be sent to supply feed stores.  See website for detail, or contact: Brenda Herbert: 337-893-0235, or Beth Trahan at bethtrahan@bellsouth.net

HOPEFUL HAVEN EQUINE RESCUE ORGANIZATION
is looking for volunteers to join convoys leaving to feed horses and cattle in the Vermillion Parish.  Dates are: Feb. 3,  Feb. 17th, March 3.  As with other groups, they also need hay, since there is a severe shortage due to saltwater damage in that region.  For more details, go to their webstie or email Debra Barlow.

RESCUE RANCH is currently caring for 63 horses and 300 cows in hurricane relief efforts.  Supplies and volunteers are needed to help these animals in Plaquemines through February and March.  Please see website for details, or email Lori Wilson or call 504-813-3120.

More help is on the way...

Carriechug ...and her name is Carrie Griffin.  Carrie is the president of Best Buddies Companion Adoption and Rescue, a group that took in FIVE of the dogs that Bayou Rescue brought back to NC (with lots of help from volunteer transporters Lynn, Russell, Meredith, Maureen, and Dave.)
Carrie will be going to help Best Friends, at their sanctuary site in Tylertown, MS.  Carrie will be flying down and back so will carry only a light load.  However, if you would like to donate, Best Friends is always in need of Walmart cards for food for their ongoing feed/water efforts (with ARNO), and gas for transport of animals.  Please consider mailing a gas card (Shell and Mobile are common) or a Walmart gift card for this mission.  You can mail it to Carrie directly (before 1/26/06) at:
184 Winthrop Road      Pittsboro, NC  27312

On behalf of the HUNDREDS of animals at the sanctuary at Best Friends, and the HUNDREDS  more still being brought in from Gulfport and New Orleans....
THANK YOU!!!!!

Bayou Rescue looks forward to bringing you updates from Carrie's travels.

ADOPT A SURVIVOR!

As of 1/11/06, there are still at least 19 canine and 3 feline hurricane survivors in foster in the triangle area.  Many have been waiting for a forever home since September 2005.

Totobillycafe2Billy1Billy the Yorkshire Terrier is on the mend from some nasty skin cuts on his back. His injury hasn’t impaired his energy.  His foster mom, Carrie Griffin says he’s quite the playful one. Billy’s last day in New Orleans included a trip to the local french bakery.  He’s decided that chocolate almond croissants, and a playmate, are keys to a happy life. Billy is also being fostered by Best Buddies.

Shybrindface_1Cane, the shepard mix in foster with Gil-Ann at Best Buddies, has really come out of his shell with their treatment of 100 kisses per day. When we first met him, this guy was so terrified  he was difficult to coax out of his cage. Gil-Ann has emailed reports of frolicking, playing with other dogs, and happy talk.  This we’ve got to see!  We’re glad Cane is in such good hands because he will still need to undergo treatment for his heartworms. Given his new home, we doubt this will do much to dampen his spirits.

LOTS O' BEAGLES!! One of the first arrivals in September was a van full of 10 beagles from Best Friends.  Of those, 3 have been reunited with their person in LA, and 1 has been adopted.  However, one of the 6 remaining, CHI CHI, was pregnant, and so now there are also 7 beaglish puppies.  These dogs were among our favorites at the Best Friends location in Tylertown.  So sweet, friendly, and fun.  Please go to Triangle Beagle Rescue to view these deserving and loving beagles!

SADA and BAILEY - These sisters were surrendered by their family after Katrina, and have been wSadabaileylarge_2aiting for a home for over 3 months since they arrived in N.C.  This pretty pair of rat terriers are a great compliment to each other. Sada is very energetic and outgoing, and Bailey is a bit more shy and calm. They love to play chase with each other.  Sada would make an excellent agility dog, and Bailey would love to go along for the ride.  Sada and Bailey house-broken, crate trained, and walk well on a leash.  They are looking for a home where they can live together, and will have a fenced yard and enough love for them both.  To find out more about Sada and Bailey, please complete the application for Independent Animal Rescue.  IAR also has a handsome red hound, LOUIE in foster - check him out!

Katielarge Katie was rescued from an overhang in a decimated area of MS, where she was caring for her her young kittens.  Katie has been through an awful ordeal but is energetic and playful now that she's been given food, TLC, and no longer has to live in 'survival mode.'  This young mom loves to be rubbed under her chin and on her face. She also loves her foster pal Sammy, and is hoping they might be adopted together so she can keep her friend by her side.  Katie, as well as Aja, another refugee kitty, are available through Independent Animal Rescue.

Nolasit Nola1 NOLA (Referral)- This young lady was brought to NC by Ann Jordan after being rescued from the streets of New Orleans in October.  Nola was adopted to a family in Charlotte, but she is a fence jumper and ended up spending most of her day in a garage.  Now she's back in foster with Ann, and is hoping for a home that will invite her inside to stay with her family.  Nola is about 1 year old, and loves children.  She also seems to do OK with cats, and plays well with other dogs.  She is an excellent snuggler, and longs to be part of a loving family. Nola will need treatment for heartworm.  If you have room in your home and heart for her, please email Ann directly to schedule a meeting. UPDATE: NOLA'S owner has been located. As of now, he is hoping to be able to care for her when he moves.  Right now, however, Nola still needs treatment for heartworm, spay, and someone to give her a safe foster home while she recovers.

Added to Adoptables...

Jampaandjulie2_1JampatoyPerhaps even more than doggie playgroups and toys, Jampa LOVES children.  Fortunately for her, her new family has 3 loving ones ages 9-13.  In addition, she has a fantastic mom that can spend some time with her during the day, and a dad that she is thrilled to see and play with each day.  Fortunately, Jampa's new family is as active as she is - she seems to be getting more walks a day than most humans get in a week.  Interestingly, Jampa's new family knew that Jampa was Tiebetan for 'love' - they practice the same form of buddhism as Jampa's foster mom, and the adoptive mom used to live in her same neighborhood.  It's a small world, and that's made a big difference in Jampa's life.

Beausmile Beaufetch Big Beau now has a home with someone with a big heart.  Bill J. in Chapel Hill came to meet Beau with the young man that he volunteers with as a big brother.  This young man seems to be a big fan of both Bill and Beau.  Beau hopes to invite his foster sis Kate over for playtime at his fantastic new digs in the country.  Bill has lots of experience with black labs - he used to train them as puppy candidates for the guide dog program.   Thanks to Lab Rescue of NC for posting Beau as a referral on their website.

Blueman1

Blueman2_1"Blue Man" will be fostered through Happy Hills.  Together with his foster mom, this fella will be treated for heartworms and  neutered before he's taken to his new adoptive home near Washington, DC. His new prize package even comes complete with a canine brother named 'dexter,' and visits during the day by the family's dog walker.. MANY THANKS TO RON for transporting from N.O. to Charlotte, and for Holly Hicks, for agreeing to transport this guy the rest of the way, on very short notice.

Bernieprofile_1BERNIE IS ADOPTED!!! This big love was found on the streets of New Orleans in early November, and got adopted on New Year's Day!  This hound/mastiff? mix is a lover of all people, and finally he has a forever home to love him right back.  He is currently recouping from heartworm treatment in the family recliner (likely with something fleece) and getting lots of TLC from his new parents in Wake Forest.  Talk about a Happy New Year!!

Img_0056Img_0039Alexandra and Nicholas have both been adopted to wonderful homes in the triangle.  Alexandra has quite an affinity for the men, and still looking for a home where she doesn't have to compete for her man's love among other dogs.  Nicholas is now Finnigan, and is living the good life with a family with an affinity for dashchunds.

Please Help HS of Southern MS

This is NOT your typical day at a typical shelter in anywhere, USA.

...Although much of the publicity is still focused on the New Orleans area, the situation has already passed the critical zone for animals at the Humane Society of Southern MS in Gulfport.  They are inundated beyond what most people could emotionally or physically handle.   There are some folks from the NE that have been hard at work in the disaster zone doing animal rescue, and in the shelter, and on the phones and computers, trying to get these truckloads of animals into good homes.

Please check the following links, and NOTE THAT A TRANSPORT FULL OF PUPPIES AND CATS WILL BE HEADED UP TOWARDS THE NE THIS WEEK.

Can you foster?  Can you adopt?  Can you email a friend?  Can you help in any way?

Click here for NEVER LEFT BEHIND WEBSITE  complete with PHOTOS of the animals that will be en route this week, and are looking for homes!!

Volunteers and Food Needed

...at Animal Rescue New Orleans.  This group is going through pallets of dog and cat food every week to feed/water animals still left on the streets until they can be rescued and reunited or placed.  This is one of the organizations also partnering with Best Friends. If you can provide help with either, please go to their website and read the 1/3/05 request for volunteers and food.
