New Year....
NEW UPDATES.....Don't think we've gone away!! Bayou Rescue, now with our 501(c)3 status, is still actively involved in the interests of animals left in the wake of the hurricane four months ago. We have been supporting ongoing rescue efforts by referring volunteers from as far as TX (thanks to the internet), and networking to help support important legislation, and working to find more foster and adoptive homes for animals brought back by several triangle teams.
In the new year, we will continue to serve as a liaison and information resource for animal welfare groups that respond to emergencies such as natural disaster, hoarding and domestic violence, and people like YOU that are interested in helping. Dave and Amber will also be attending the Noah's Wish animal rescue training in February, as will Colleen Lanigan and Kelly Ronnow. We will also transition from a blog to a website (thanks in advance, Dave!)
Also, we are now focusing on vet care and permanent placement for the remaining 25 dogs and 3 cats that were brought back into the triangle area and taken in by organizations such as Triangle Beagle Rescue, Happy Hills, Independent Animal Rescue, New Leash on Life, Best Buddies, and several in other foster homes (Thanks Pam, Allison, and Julie for fostering!)
Together, Bayou Rescue and these other organizations have incurred vet bills from 35 Katrina dogs and 10 Katrina kitties, that are in around the $10,000 range. No chump change. The most common treatment is for heartworm, several of which were not eligible for reimbursement from a special fund started in Oct. The majority of the animals also require spay/neuter, treatment for skin and ear infections, and a variety of intestinal illnesses.
Thank you Jaye at Tony Hall and Associates, and Deb Bialeschki and Karla Henderson, for donations made specifically to help with the vet care of these special new residents.
If you can help offset some of the vet costs, you may make your tax-deductible contribution to Bayou Rescue directly marked for "VET CARE", and they will be allocated according to need. OR you may donate to any of the aforementioned organizations that also are caring for these rescues.
In this new year, won't you consider opening your heart and home to one of these animals? You may view these & other available animals at Best Buddies Companion Rescue & Adoption, Triangle Beagle Rescue, New Leash on Life, Happy Hills, and Independent Animal Rescue.
Finally, Best Friends and partnering organizations are making a push to bring in the estimated thousands of dogs and cats still roaming in the MS gulf and New Orleans area. If you are interested in volunteering, please see the Dec. 15th entry "An Accord".
