Bayou Rescue Speaks against BSL

On Tuesday, Nov. 21st, Dave and Amber Alsobrooks spoke at the Watauga County Board of Commissioners meeting about proposed changes to the animal control ordinance.  The couple spoke on behalf of Blue Ridge Vet Clinic, Bayou Rescue, and as guardians of dogs that would be under breeds listed in a section titled "Confinement and Control of Dangerous Domestic Animals."  The proposed amendment citied breeds of “known vicious tendencies" such as the "Bulldog, Bull Terrier, Doberman pinscher,Rottweiler (and) PitBull."

Read the article in the Watauga Democrat.

A big THANK YOU to the commissioners, who carefully considered requests to remove the verbiage based on several arguments.  Also, several of the proposed amendments were being considered in the same ordinance to protect animals and improve animal welfare, such as restrictions on tethering, increased fines and penalties for animal abandonment and cruelty, and other ammendments to place more responsibility on the animal owner.

Happy Tails

We have lots of good updates about some of the animals & situations you may have been following!

KAT5 animal rescue had been working for 6 months to rehabilitate and place into rescue the 150+ animals in a hoarding situation in Dewy Rose, GA.   Thanks to donations to Bayou Rescue, we were able to contribute to a transport of 18 animals to a rescue in TX.  Bayou Rescue also went to Dewy Rose and help transport two golden retrievers into rescue in TN & NC.

437shayna Shayna (formerlly Shane) was taken to Heartland Golden Rescue in Knoxville TN (Thanks Jane Moore & Pauline @ Heartlands for all your help!)  Click here to read Shayna's story.  The most recent report is that she is in a wonderful foster home and making excellent progress in socialization and trusting people again.

Billykelsy Billy was found in a bathtub in the home on the facility.  Almost all his hair was gone, among other ailments.  Billy's condition was so bad that he was used as evidence in court!  Amber fell in love fast in their travels together from GA, to Murphy NC, to Raleigh NC where the Neuse River Golden Retriver Rescue had kindly agreed to take him in.  Amber and Billy spent the night with some friends and animal lovers in Raleigh, before taking him to NRGRR.  Amber's friends Erica and Michael and their cat Kinsey fell in love quickly too, and called NRGRR the very next day to put in their application to adopt Billy.  Billy loves his new home, his new parents, and his new kitty.  He has made astounding progress in gaining confidence, and  a new coat.  Even better, Amber gets to be his 'doggodmother'.

Crosbylounge Crosby (aka Alex) has found himself right at home with a couple in Carborro who live very close to the dog park.  In fact, he's quite a regular there.  Crosby's folks have also enrolled him in obedience class where he can show off what a good boy.  Aside from his doting parents, and dog playtime, Crosby is also enjoys having reign over the futon that he so desperately wanted to lie on from the moment he first visited. (Thanks fosters Ian&Ann, Allison & David, & Blue Ridge Vet).

Wesnewfam Wesley hit the jackpot with his new home in Raleigh.  His happy ending comes complete with another canine playmate (Max) who has similar good looks and love for play.  He also lucked out with 2 older non-canine kids to play soccer and fetch with, AND some super guardians who happen to have a big fenced yard to stage all the fun & games.
